The Coverlet Collection c. 1820-1860 |
| Coverlets, both functional and
artistic, are generally used to cover a bed. German and British
immigrants are credited with introducing coverlet weaving to the
United States. Many weavers were farmers who produced coverlets
during the winter months while they waited to return to their
occupation during the rest of the year. A good deal of them
signed their work with their name, date and place, preserving
the history of the piece. |
