Mary Koval |
With America undergoing tremendous growth spurts -
economically, socially, and industrially - fabrics and
textiles took on characteristics reflective of the
rapidly changing times.
Rich in the authenticity of the era, this collection
comes from a select variety of Mary's antique quilts,
with fabrics that boast traditional turkey red grounds,
overprinted with chrome-yellows and blues, greens, or
blacks. The large scale paisley prints compliment the
small repeats - both typical of the period, and you'll
see influences of India with precisely spaced identical
florals, and Chinoserie - prints borrowed from Chinese
motifs.
Ombré prints were popular, as were wider-than-usual
prints which were often striped or floral and used to
create the illusion of dimension. Mary has skillfully
re-created this illusion using strong contrasting colors
to create a dramatic effect. |
